Spellbound Brewery Review – 7/2/16
10 Lippincott Lane, Suite 12 Mt. Holly, NJ 08060
On a beautiful holiday weekend, The Stoutmeister and I headed to Mount Holly to check out the Spellbound Brewery. We had tasted a few samples of their wares at the Battleship Brewfest, and were anxious to try more. The brewery is tucked back into an industrial complex surrounded by modest family homes and nice neighborhoods. The bar area is beautiful! The wall behind the bar is all wood planks of different colors, with a large picture window into the brewery. There was bar seating, high tops, and a couple of picnic tables with strings of tea lights running around the room. It was very cozy and inviting. It wasn’t very crowded, but the clientele was friendly. One gentleman asked the Stoutmeister where he was from originally, and correctly guessed he was a Filipino. Paul had spent time working in the Philippines, and he and The Stoutmeister had a rather lengthy conversation reminiscing about the Philippines. As a side note, I was surprised that he thought the Stoutmeister was Filipino. When we visited the Philippines last, no one recognized him as a native and were quite taken back when this American was speaking Tagalog with them. (Yes, he has faded quite a bit since migrating to this country).
10 beers were available, and not a bad one in the bunch. Their tasting menu is diverse, and we loved them all. It was difficult selecting a favorite. Lights, Darks, Ales, Fruit flavored, barrel aged! Great selection. In fact, I think it is the best variety of any of the breweries we have reviewed to date.
On to the brewery tour. Many of the posse prefer to skip this task, and focus solely on tasting, but I am interested in the entire process. Today The Stoutmeister joined me as our tour guide Mike lead us through the brewery, discussing in detail each step of the brewing process. Best tour ever! Mike is very personable and knowledgeable, and answered all of our questions. I must point out that this is the cleanest brewery I have ever seen! It sparkles! While we were touring, 2 young men were busy scrubbing down the floors and equipment. Even the pallets of empty cans were well placed, and neatly arranged. I wonder if these guys would come over and clean my house. I’d be happy if they would just do my bathrooms. Oh well, doubtful that’s gonna happen. Growlers, 6 packs, and cases are available for take-out! Mike also mentioned that an Imperial Stout will be available in October to celebrate Spellbound’s second anniversary. (I think The Stoutmeister is already planning a return trip).
So, I recommend Spellbound for all my beer-loving buddies. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon!
Favorite beers of the day:
- Pretzel – White Oak IPA
- The Stoutmeister – Porter aged in Palo Santo Wood
Additional Posse Comments:
- The Stoutmeister – I liked every brew I tasted; I had a most difficult time choosing a favorite
- Pretzel – Spellbound has the best shirt selections ever! Great logo, lots of colors, and lots of styles including t-shirts, polo, camp shirts and sweatshirts.
- Pretzel – It’s a good thing the bathrooms were separate, since someone left the men’s room door open, and the seat up! (I blame the clientele, not the brewers!)
- The Stoutmeister – I think I left the men’s room door open. Oh well, I’m sure someone closed it.
Final Scorecard: Spellbound
