Wow! It’s been a long time since we had a full contingency of the Beer Posse plus 3 guest reviewers (welcome Big Gunz and Cat-Man-Do) to do a brewery review. And I must say, it was quite a rowdy crew. But let’s get down to the details…
Farmers and Banker opened up in an old bank (just in case you thought it opened in a barn). I love the remnants used as décor from the olden days. The vault is now the merchandise room, complete with safety deposit boxes. There’s an old safe that is now a water station, and in the Beer Garden there is the drive-up teller window. I wonder if they serve drinks through it during the warmer months. Hmmm, I guess I’ll have to come back and check that out during the summer. For seating there are plenty of tables, high-tops, and bar seating. Now I gotta say, I am not a fan of the high top’s chairs. There is a very small back support, which causes your jacket and backpacks to continuously fall to the floor. I found the high-top chairs to be too small for my fat ass. Next time, I’ll opt for the regular tables with more comfortable seating. With our scores all over the board, the one thing we all did agree on, was that the acoustics were really terrible (of course it was exacerbated by the cacophonous and rowdy Beer Posse). It was very noisy, and the sound seemed to be bouncing off the walls. Better come during off hours if you want to have a private, quiet conversation.
The Queen of Funk, Princess, and I decided to check our the outdoor Beer Garden area. It was very welcoming with plenty of picnic tables, a couple area heaters, and the aforementioned drive-up teller window. I stood at the window for about 10 minutes, and no one came to wait on me. I guess I’ll have to return in warmer weather. The Tinkler took it upon herself to inspect the bathrooms, which got high marks for cleanliness, privacy, and the number available.
There is on street parking and a decent size lot behind the building. The Woodstown Hotel and Tavern is right across the street and I have it on good authority that the food there is wonderful. If you want to eat in, there are a plethora of take-out menus available in the brewery.
The beers on tap were all tasty and cold! 15 on tap, plus some non-alcoholic options for our Designated Drivers (DD’s – Princess, The Tinkler, and Nanny Franny). Overall Decemberfest seemed to be the Beer Posse favorite, although The Beer Posse liked all the beers. We lucked out that Mike the brewer was in-house so we were able to get a lengthy and informative tour of the brewery room and Farmer’s and Bankers processes. Now adays it is rare to get a live tour since the beer-tenders are usually extremely busy servicing the customers, and the brewer’s are likewise very busy or not on site. So thank you Mike! We enjoyed the tour.
So the antics of the Beer Posse – yeah, you can’t take us anywhere. One of our “cultural” activities is stealing each other’s unattended beers. I had finished a couple flights and went for a full pour of Cow Tippin’ when I got distracted by the Tinkler (yeah it was probably a set-up). When I turned around, my glass was empty! And there were many victims and perpetrators this day. (This is why you have to take your beer to the bathroom with you).
So the most interesting conversation of the day… The Queen of Funk was telling Nanny Franny about her recent trip through Southeast Asia. Nanny Franny wanted to know what exotic items she had enjoyed. The Queen mentioned snake wine and various bugs. Nanny Franny was kind of horrified by the thought of eating bugs, when I said “I’d rather eat bugs than hair”. Ok, Nanny Franny thought this was very peculiar and unbelievable, so she asked me, “What about a cockroach? Would you eat a cockroach?” I replied, “Of course it depends on how it is prepared. I’d rather eat a cockroach sauteed in butter that a bowl of hair!” What’s not to understand? I get really grossed our if I find hair in my food, even if it’s my own! Get over it!
So we had a fun afternoon full of great beer, great companions, and great hosts! Thanks Farmer’s and Bankers! We’ll be back in the summer to hang out in the Beer Garden and play some cornhole!
